With a bright smile, three-year-old Cassidy Witbooi accepted gifts and a birthday cake from Sowetan in an early birthday celebration on Tuesday.

"Thank you. Mommy, will you please hang up my card?" she asked. "A teddy bear. Look mommy, it's Barbie," she said as she received a pink T-shirt with the famous doll print.

The little girl, who turned three yesterday, was knocked down by a car driven by a 16-year-old unlicensed driver outside her home in Claremont, Johannesburg, in October last year.

The teenage driver of the vehicle was fined R2500 last Wednesday for reckless and negligent driving. .

Cassidy spent two months in hospital and has undergone 17 operations to her damaged right leg. The family has so far spent more than R50000 on her medical costs.

lTo contribute towards Cassidy's medical costs, please deposit your donation into the FNB account number 7414129972. The branch code is 252505. It's in Cassidy Witbooi's name.
