In the United States and Canada they have the popular 911 as the national emergency number, in Australia it is 000, in Jamaica 110 and in the United Kingdom it is 999.

South Africa has joined the ever growing list of global countries introducing such numbers for its citizens and visitors in dire need of help.

Coordinated by the Department of Communications, South Africa will in November launch 112 for people to access emergency service providers.

The introduction of a single national emergency number is one of the legacy projects of the 2010 Fifa World Cup finals.

Dan Moyo, World Cup government unit's head, said 112 will provide a 24-hour service to people in need of assistance.

Moyo said people with disabilities, including those with impaired sight and hearing, will also be able to access the emergency number.
