Police in Thohoyandou are investigating the death of a convicted rapist who was found hanging in a cell on Friday.

Nthatheni Ndou, 29, of Dididi, was convicted by the Thohoyandou high court on two counts of rape on Friday.

He was arrested in 2006 after raping a 14-year-old teenager. He claimed that she was a prostitute and that he had paid to have sex with her.

Ndou told the court that he was the girl's regular sex customer, but this was rejected by the court.

Police Inspector Nkanukeni Raedane said: "The prisoner hanged himself with a long sleeve shirt. The convict's death was noticed as police were taking prisoners to Matatshe prison. - Chester Makana
