A Grade 8 pupil has been shot and killed inside a classroom at Zamazulu High School in Imbali township, Pietermaritzburg.
Sphamandla Hlubi, 15, was shot dead yesterday with his father's gun, which he had allegedly stolen from home.
The incident happened just after the morning assembly at about 8.30am.
Hlubi allegedly took a 9mm pistol out of his bag in the classroom and began showing it off to his fellow classmates.
A quarrel broke out between him and one of his classmates and the two wrestled for the gun.
A shot went off hitting him in the forehead.
Classes were cancelled for the day and terrified pupils were sent home.
Police spokesman Inspector Joey Jeevan said the pupil had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
Jeevan said they believe Hlubi tried to warn the other pupil that there was a round in the chamber.
"He attempted to grab back the pistol, however, a shot went off hitting him in the forehead, fatally wounding him," she said.
The pupil's father claims he was not aware that his son had removed his firearm from the safe.
A negligent safeguarding of a firearm case has been opened against him and is being investigated.
The father has been arrested. He will appear in the Pietermaritzburg magistrate's court shortly.
KwaZulu-Natal department education spokesman Mbali Thusi said they were shocked by the incident.
