Florah Kobowane was a God-fearing woman respected by many people in Moletsane, Soweto.
A staunch parishioner of St Philip Neri Catholic Church in Moletsane, Kobowane was loved and adored by the locals. She died at the age of 80 on January 28 after a short illness.
Kobowane was born in Zeerust, in North West, where she did her primary schooling.
She came to Johannesburg in the 1960s and worked in Edenvale as a domestic.
After 13 years Kobowane moved to Spoortnet and was employed as a cleaner for 20 years.
She served as a shop steward during her two decades at Spoornet.
She also took part in the 1956 woman's protest against the pass laws.
Kobowane stopped working after falling ill with respiratory problems,
She then concentrated on church activities, becoming vice-president of the woman's guild in the Moletsane parish for five years.
"She was a prayerful woman who recited verses as if she had memorised the Bible," said Bonolo Maseko, one of her daughters.
Kobowane is survived by her four children - Bontle, 55, Bonolo, 53, Omphile, 41, Kelebogile, 40, and two brothers.
She is also survived by six grandchildren and five great-grand-children.
She will be buried tomorrow at Doornkop Cemetery in Soweto.
The funeral service will be held at St Philip Neri Catholic Church in Moletsane, from 7.30am and the cortege will leave at 10am.
