The KwaZulu-Natal department of health said yesterday that theatre operations at Durban's King Edward Hospital were back on track.

The hospital suffered a major setback on Tuesday when its emergency theatre operations were grounded and only critical cases were operated on.

This was apparently because of a shortage of basic equipment in the hospital's theatre. This was caused by the poor state of the department's financial affairs.

Its expenditure for the 2007/08 financial year was R14959 billion, exceeding the R13925 billion budget for the financial year by R1034 billion. The department overspent by R730million in compensations for employees and R637million for goods and services.
