Contrary to public perception the current spread of cholera is due to "a lack of clean water" and sanitation and "not only" the influx of infected Zimbabweans, parliament was told yesterday.

"Cholera does not just come with foreigners. We need to address our issues of water supply and quality," the health department's Thami Mseleku told parliament's portfolio committee on health.

Pam Yoko of Water Affairs said communities must have good access to water and sanitation.

The health department's Frew Benson said cholera was now spreading south "along the N1 highway".
