South Africa is delivering on its promise during the bidding process to make the 2010 World Cup a truly African event.
The government is embarking on a mass mobilisation of fans in all the 53 countries on the Mother Continent.
Dan Moyo, the government's World Cup head, said they were working closely with the sports departments and soccer federations in Africa on this project.
"We are targeting 2 000 fans per country, the aim is to ensure that Africans will also be here in their big numbers during the World Cup matches," he said.
"We have seen during the previous Africa Cup of Nations and other soccer competitions where African teams are that the atmosphere is awesome.
"The passion of Africans for soccer games always generated a lot of interest among the people in other continents.
"We are working with the Local Organising Committee so that World Cup sponsors and partners operating in Africa can also help us bring the fans to South Africa. The process of selecting the 2 000 fans in all the countries will be handled by the departments of sports and soccer federations.
"As part of this project, we also want to do some educational programmes to encourage Africans to support each other during the tournament.
"We all know the Confederations Cup match between Brazil and Italy has generated a lot of interest, but our appeal is that our people must support the entire event."
On the local front, Moyo said the Department of Sport and Recreation's plans with Safa are at an advanced stage.
"We are finalising the memorandum of understanding to cooperate in mobilising club supporters for the national team."
