Wits Metrorail responded to the two Monday train smashes that left 301 passengers injured by promising to improve their signalling infrastructure.
While Metrorail could not point out poor signalling infrastructure or human error as the cause of the crashes in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, and Springs on the East Rand, they emphasised the need to pay urgent attention to these two areas. Spokesman Sibusiso Ngomane said yesterday their investigations would reveal the cause of the accidents. Metrorail promised to heighten random checking of staff for substance abuse as part of their safety enforcement campaign.
