Arshavin signs for Arsenal

LONDON - Arsenal have finally completed the transfer of Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petersburg for an undisclosed fee.

The 27-year-old Russia international agreed a "long-term" deal with the Gunners on Monday. Final confirmation was held up while the Premier League assessed whether all the necessary paperwork had been completed before the transfer deadline.

The two clubs had earlier disagreed over the fee and over Arshavin's personal terms. He travelled to London on Monday for a medical to complete the deal and, it is understood, will now return to Russia to complete some personal arrangements before starting work at his new club.

He could make his debut in Sunday's north London derby at Tottenham but given that the Russian domestic season finished in November he may not be fully match fit.

He will be unable to figure in the Gunners' Champions League campaign as he has already featured for Zenit in the competition.

Meanwhile David Beckham wants to stay at AC Milan after his loan from Los Angeles Galaxy finishes on March 9, the Serie A club's chief executive, Adriano Galliani, said yesterday.

The 33-year-old midfielder, who has been in fine form for Milan, moved to Italy in the US close season on a two-month loan deal to try to stay in the frame for a place in the England side.

For technical reasons, his loan is actually until June meaning Milan can talk to Galaxy outside of the transfer window, which closed on Monday. But there is a written agreement that he goes back to the US in March. - BBC and Reuters
