Former ANC KwaZulu-Natal stalwart-turned-Cope-member Tobias Badumuti has died.

Known as a "walking library" Badumuti was killed in a head-on collision while travelling with his friend, Jabulo Ndaba, on Sunday night.

Badumuti was on his way home in Tongaat, on the north coast, from a meeting.

His vehicle is reported to have turned sideways after the collision and rolled several times before it came to a halt near Fairbreeze.

Ndaba sustained minor injuries and is recovering at home after receiving treatment.

Badumuti, 47, Ndaba, Phillip Mhlongo and Bongani Xulu were the first ANC members in KwaZulu-Natal to defect to Cope.

Last year Badumuti was appointed Cope interim chairman of Ilembe district.
