Cope whipped badly in by-elections

The ANC has won 22 of the 27 wards in Wednesday's by-elections, beating the fledging Cope in all but one of the wards it contested.

ANC spokesman Carl Niehaus said yesterday: "While by-elections are not generally regarded as a reliable indicator of party support, the ANC is pleased to note that it won all the by-elections in Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng."

Cope had been confident of winning most of the 15 by-elections that it contested in Northern Cape as a result of ANC councillors defecting to it, but it won only one seat in Groblershoop.

The ID took control of the ANC's Kamiesberg seat, leaving the ANC in charge of 11 wards. The ACDP, PAC and Azapo fared badly, winning as little as three votes in some of the wards they contested.

Cope and the ANC face off again next month when eight by-elections are held in PE.
