McKeed Kotlolo and Sapa
A senior police officer has been arrested on 61 counts of fraud.
Superintendent Clive Garret Carstens allegedly submitted fraudulent claims involving overtime he did not work and used a state vehicle and tollgate passes while off-duty.
Carstens, who is commander of the Local Criminal Record Centre in Witbank, was arrested yesterday by members of the provincial Organised Crime Unit led by Senior Superintendent Obed Ngwenya.
According to Superintendent Abie Khoabane of the Mpumalanga provincial police, Carstens allegedly made fraudulent claims in which he stated that he worked overtime when he was in fact at home in Pretoria.
Carstens is also alleged to have used police tollgate pass without authorisation and made false entries in the log book.
After his arrest Carstens was charged and immediately appeared in court.
He was granted R10000 bail and his case was postponed to March 13.
l Meanwhile, Sapa reports that police commissioner Mulangi Mphego, who appeared in court last week on a charge of defeating the ends of justice, has not been suspended.
This was confirmed by spokesman Sally de Beer, who said disciplinary action could only take place according to SAPS disciplinary procedure regulations.
The National Prosecuting Authority has charged Mphego, alleging that he was involved in producing an affidavit by drug trafficker Glenn Agliotti that absolved suspended national police commissioner Jackie Selebi of wrongdoing.
