Sack bad cops

The Ministry of Safety and Security has little time left to convince all and sundry that, come the 2010 World Cup, the police would have dealt crime a heavy blow.

The Ministry of Safety and Security has little time left to convince all and sundry that, come the 2010 World Cup, the police would have dealt crime a heavy blow.

This week's emotional speech by the minister, Nathi Mthethwa, that they will track down and show no mercy to criminals is welcome.

But in his quest to eradicate crime, the minister must also focus on corrupt officers who collude with syndicates.

There are still dockets that go missing mysteriously and cases that are deliberately improperly investigated.

The minister's tough stance on crime is appreciated but until he rids his department of these bad elements, little progress will be made in the fight against the scourge.
