Chocolate cake for your valentine

Valentine's Day is not just about giving roses or diamond rings.

It is a romantic day for couples to show how much they care about each other.

Even small gestures count a lot. Baking a cake is a very romantic gesture for this day of love.

If you want to show that special someone that you care, Sowetan has the perfect recipe for you.

CHOCOLATE SWEETHEART CAKES

Ingredients

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 tsp baking soda

1/2 tsp vanilla essence

3 tbsp cocoa powder

3/4 cup flour

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/8 tsp salt

1/2 cup cold water

3 tbsp cooking oil

1/2 tsp white vinegar

Chocolate Frosting

Stir together 1 tablespoon melted butter or margarine and 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder until smooth.

Add 2/3 cup sifted powdered sugar. Stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla and about 2 to 3 teaspoons milk to make it of spreading consistency, beating with wire whisk or wooden spoon until smooth.

Method

Grease a baking pan with oil and little flour.

Stir together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, soda and salt in a medium-sized bowl.

Stir together water, oil, vinegar and vanilla extracts. Add dry ingredients and beat well.

Pour the batter into a pan and bake it at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes.

Leave the cake to cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes.

Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut the cake into four heart shapes. Spread the chocolate frosting on all the pieces.

Decorate the hearts with roses and other pretty things.
