Volunteers join war on crime in Mpumalanga

The Mpumalanga department of safety and security has recruited 700 volunteers to help combat crime in preparation for the 2010 World Cup.

The Mpumalanga department of safety and security has recruited 700 volunteers to help combat crime in preparation for the 2010 World Cup.

This was announced by Desmond Golding, Mpumalanga's World Cup deputy director-general as part of their 500 days countdown celebrations on Monday.

Golding said the 700 tourism safety monitors were undergoing training in basic security matters to make "the Mpumalanga 2010 World Cup experience crime free".

"This will also bolster safety and security in the province in general," said Golding, adding that an additional 250 traffic officers have also been recruited and were also being trained for the World Cup.

Mpumalanga has also recruited 210 volunteers who are being trained in sports leadership and events management.

Golding added that the construction of the new Mbombela Stadium, which has been in the news following the brutal killing of local politician Jimmy Mohlala, was on track.

"We are still on schedule for completion by the end of July this year, five months ahead of the contracted handover date of the stadium to Fifa.

"The province and host city of Mbombela have built up an excellent relationship and are working together to ensure we deliver on our 2010 value proposition and successful games."

Golding went on to say the construction of the stadium is also benefitting residents of Mbombela, with just over 1 200 employed on site.
