Members of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union and the National Union of Tertiary Employees of SA were taking part, Nehawu president Noluthando Sibiya said.
Members of the union gathered at the main campus in Pretoria yesterday to decide on their next step. Staff at the Soshanguve campus, north of Pretoria, were also still on strike.
The union reduced its demand for a 15 percent wage increase to 11 percent, said Sibiya.
Last year the university's management offered a 9,7 percent increase, which the unions rejected. When negotiations resumed on January 13, the offer was revised to 12,5 percent.
University spokesman Willa de Ruyter said management had confirmed the 12,5 percent increase offer to staff members.
De Ruyter said the offer followed an additional grant to the university by the Department of Education.
"Despite this generous offer by TUT, the unions declared a dispute because of remuneration principles. This led to a decision by the unions to embark on strike action," she said.
The university said it considered its offer reasonable.
Yesterday, the bus service at the university was not running.
"To date there is no bus service for students, but we will assess the situation," De Ruyter said, adding that the university apologised to students for the inconvenience. - Sapa
