The Gauteng government has urged South Africans to embrace the Confederations Cup and 2010 World Cup by starting to buy tickets for the two global soccer fiestas.
Barbara Creecy, MEC for sports, arts, culture and recreation, said the two events provide a platform for South Africans to show their passion for soccer to the world.
In a statement issued on Monday to celebrate the 500 days countdown to the World Cup, Creecy said they were happy with Gauteng's readiness for the two events.
Creecy said it was also important for South Africans to start wearing national team colours to show their support for Bafana Bafana.
Gauteng will occupy centre stage during the Confederations Cup and World Cup, with the opening and closing ceremonies taking place in the province.
Ellis Park Stadium will be the venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the "Festival of Champions" in June this year.
Soccer City will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the World Cup, an event expected to attract more than 500000 tourists.
Most of the tourists, including the participating national teams, will land at the OR Tambo International Airport.
The process of upgrading the Kempton Park-based airport is also under way.
The International Broadcast Centre will also be in Gauteng. The facility in Nasrec, Johannesburg , is being upgraded by the City of Johannesburg.
Fifa headquarters will also be in Sandton for the two competitions.
"Dedicated police, emergency, medical, health, traffic and disaster management services are gearing up to ensure quality service delivery to residents and visitors alike," said Creecy.
