AmaZulu and Mamelodi Sundowns could find themselves in hot water after a section of their supporters fought at their Absa Premiership match at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban on Sunday.
The supporters displayed their unsporting behaviour when they threw objects at each other at the main grandstands. No one was reported injured, though.
The confrontation happened shortly after Diyo Sibisi scored the clincher for The Brazilians on the stroke of full time.
Premier Soccer League (PSL) general manager Ace Ncobo yesterday said the league had received the match commissioner's report detailing the incident.
Ncobo, however, was not in a position to comment about the content of the letter, saying everything will be handled by their disciplinary committee.
Mfanano Majola, the PSL's head of security, confirmed the incident and gave Sowetan a detailed account of the showdown.
"The whole thing started after Sundowns scored their winning goal. One of their supporters ran towards AmaZulu fans to celebrate the goal and this irritated the home side's fans," explained Majola yesterday.
"The security personnel managed to remove the fan away from AmaZulu's supporters. At this stage AmaZulu's supporters also came in to assist the security.
"This led to supporters of both teams shouting at each other, and also throwing paper cups at each other. It was a disappointing situation."
Usuthu head of security Qedi Dlamini described the incident as unfortunate.
"As AmaZulu FC we are disappointed by the behaviour of both teams' supporters and we condemn such behavior, especially as we are hosting two major events - the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup," Qedi said.
"The situation could have been bad, but we managed to control the crowd and nobody got hurt. We managed to assist everyone to exit the stadium safely."
Mahlatse Mphahlele, Downs' publicist, also condemned the skirmish.
