A new gospel outfit that wants to change the face of gospel music and attract the youth to the word of God has emerged out of Durban.

The group, Abafana Bokukhanya, consists of seven guys. They say they are not going to compromise over preaching the word of God through music.

"We formed the group in 2006 after we combined two gospel groups that were operating independently of each other at the time.

"Our mission is to spread the word of God, and as a group we need to attract the youth and impress on them about the need to look up to God for guidance and inspiration," says Cebo Khuzwayo, one of the group's members.

The rest of the members are Isaac Buthelezi, Mhlangabezi Ntenza, Thandanani Mbambo, Nhlanhla Mgobhozi, Nkosi Mbeko and Vela Ngubane.

The group was established in April 2006 at Umgababa after a group called Harmonies and Ukukhanya joined forces..

They tried to record a few albums at that time but there was no breakthrough, until they were invited to a wedding where they were heard by music producer Ashwell Mpungose, who then brought them to the attention of Lele Gcwensa.

They were then signed under the label of Antica Music in a joint venture with Ashwell Records and recorded their first album titled Akukabonakali.

The album has taken many music legends by surprise. It was officially released in 2008 and is distributed by Big Fish Music.
