Bloemfontein Celtic eased their relegation blues when they demolished Thanda Royal Zulu 6-1 in a one-sided Absa Premiership encounter at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Bloemfontein yesterday.
Mark Mayambela opened the flood gates when he scored in the 28th minute. He rose above defenders to connect a cross from Moses Spandeel. Phunya Selesele pressurised their visitors from KwaZulu-Natal and extended their lead through debutante Gert Schalkwyk, who scored three goals, ensuring the hosts collect maximum points.
The other goals came from Petros Mahlatsi and Geofrey Seruankuma, while Royals' consolation goal was scored by Nkosinathi Nhleko, who beat keeper Shahib Walters from a very awkward angle.
Royals had little to offer. They gave possession away unnecessarily and were made to pay dearly. Celtic applied more pressure and there was absolute desperation from Royals, who made three changes in an attempt to stabilise themselves. They introduced Katlego Loke, Peter Ndlovu and Nduduzo Phakathi for Clement Mazibuko, Sibusiso Hadebe and July Mahlangu.
However, the changes did not make any difference in terms of reducing the deficit.
l Diyo Sibisi scored the winner when Mamelodi Sundowns scored twice in the 90th minute to deny AmaZulu a win in their league clash at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban yesterday. The host went up 1-0 from a goal by Dumisani Ngwenya (72nd minute). But Surprise Moriri equalised in the 90th minute from the penalty spot after AmaZulu's goalkeeper, Kakonje Kalililo, was red-carded for fouling Siboniso Gaxa. Sibisi then struck seconds later to seal victory for the visitors.
l Santos' trip up the coast was a profitable one as they earned all three points from a 1-0 win against Bay United at the EPRU Stadium yesterday. Erwin Isaacs scored the only goal of the match with just a couple of minutes to go.
