A battalion of Rwandan army foot soldiers, followed by Congolese troops, were on the road to Bunangana, about 30km east of central Rutshuru, on the border with Uganda.
The Rwandan troops were equipped with rifles and rocket-launchers, and carrying the Rwandan flag. Congolese army T-55 tanks are already in Rutshuru, headquarters of Nkunda, the nominal leader of the National Congress for the Defence of the People, western military sources said.
Rwandan forces crossed into eastern DRC on Tuesday, in what was announced as a joint operation with Congolese forces against the Rwandan Hutu rebels of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation (FDLR) of Rwanda.
No fighting has so far been reported, but FDLR head, Ignace Murwanashyaka, warned the rebels would defend themselves if attacked. - Sapa-AFP
