Cholera putting strain on nurses

Cholera continues to spread across the country, putting more strain on already understaffed and under-resourced healthcare facilities.

In Limpopo the situation is even worse than in other provinces.

Zimbabwean nationals infected with the water-borne disease are still streaming into the Musina hospital seeking medical help. The facility has erected three tents to accommodate cholera patients but this is just a stop-gap measure.

The Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa has expressed its extreme concern about the cholera epidemic.

Spokesman Asanda Fongqo said: "If health officials do not address the shortage of nurses urgently, we will not be able to manage the outbreak problem."

Despite the increased rate of cholera, Limpopo's health department is adamant it has the situation under control.
