The ANC says it does not have powers to impose the election date on President Kgalema Motlanthe.

Party spokesman Brian Sokutu said yesterday that the ANC had its views on the election date but their opinion would not inform Motlanthe's decision.

"The ANC, like all other political parties, has been discussing a possible date, but the decision will be taken by President Motlanthe in consultation with the IEC," said Sokutu.

"President Motlanthe's decision will largely be informed by the Independent Electoral Commission's readiness, and not the opinion of the ANC.

"Like all other parties we are waiting for the announcement of the date," he said.

Sources at Luthuli House said the ANC structures have agreed that elections should be held in April "preferably mid-April".

"It is up to President Motlanthe to implement that decision in his state of the nation address in February," said a source.
