ANC and DA take on city over manager

In a rare show of unity the ANC and DA are lobbying for the reinstatement of suspended Sabelo Shabangu, the Nkomazi municipal manager.

Several politicians have already called for the lifting of Shabangu's suspension.

The group argues that Shabangu was suspended without the correct procedures being followed.

Shabangu, an ANC member, was suspended on November 4 last year during a council meeting after allegations of poor performance.

A DA councillor, Alex Maphanga, claimed that the people who suspended Shabangu did not follow procedures.

"We are going to support Sabelo to see to it that he is treated according to the labour laws," said Maphanga.

He said there were certain officials in the municipality who should be fired because of poor performance.

The chairman of the Marloth Park Property Owners Association, Alwyn de Bruin, said Shabangu's suspension was uncalled for.

"We have so far failed to get answers from anyone on whether Shabangu is guilty or not.

"We have written a letter to the MEC for local government (Candith Mashego-Dlamini) for her intervention," said De Bruin.

Young Communist League secretary Mandla Tivane claimed that Shabangu's suspension was a result of his support for ANC president Jacob Zuma ahead of the Polokwane conference.

"This is not a government of boyfriends and girlfriends. We call on the communities of Nkomazi to march to the municipality and knock sense into councillors who suspended Sabelo without following proper procedures," said Tivane.

The spokesman for the ANC Youth League, Harmza Ngwenya, said the league supported Shabangu because his suspension was not procedural.
