The National Teachers Union has called for an extension of the deadline for the registration of more than 40000 matric candidates who are expected to write their supplementary examinations nationally.
The deadline for the registration process is tomorrow.
The Department of Education said all systems were in place for the examinations to kick off at centres to be announced soon.
The union's deputy president, Allen Thompson, yesterday said the delays in releasing the results and the fact that there were still those who had not received their results, calls for an extension until all the regularities had been cleared.
"We want the department to extend the registration deadline in order to accommodate candidates who still have not received their results," he said.
KwaZulu-Natal SA Democratic Teachers Union secretary Sipho Nkosi said they expected close to 40000 candidates to write the supplementary examinations.
"We urge them to use this time productively to revise. They must work harder so that they can pass," Nkosi said.
Sowetan spoke to a worried pupil who is still waiting for the release of his English result.
Sibusiso Khumalo was a pupil at Thathunyawo High School in Newcastle. He is one of 40 pupils at the school who are still waiting for their complete results.
Khumalo said he had not received any explanation as to why his results were incomplete.
"I read in one of the newspapers that the results that are being withheld are of candidates believed to have cheated. I did not cheat. Other schools in our area have the same problem. I just wish they would sort out whatever is wrong so that I can move on with my life," Khumalo said.
He has been denied entry to the University of Johannesburg, where he had initially been accepted to study civil engineering, because of his incomplete results.
Mbali Thusi, Education Department spokesman, said only candidates who had not met the minimum promotion and certification requirements for the national Senior Certificate may write supplementary examinations. She said they hadto write a maximum of two subjects.
She also said candidates who were absent from one or more external examinations because of illness may register for the supplementary examination in all the subjects missed, provided they submit documentary proof.
