Soweto political activist Alinah Nkhobo succumbed to a heart disease on January 6.
Nkhobo's heart condition was diagnosed 10 years ago. She even had radical heart surgery a few years back. Nkhobo was born in Sophiatown in 1952. Her family was later forcibly moved to Meadowlands in Soweto.
Her political activism started when she was elected to the executive committee of the Meadowlands branch of the South African National Civic Organisation in 1984.
She was also a fierce force behind the struggle for workers' rights at clothing company Skipper International. Her colleagues describe her as someone with exceptional leadership qualities.
Nkhobo, 57, later joined the ANC in Soweto and participated in many of the movement's programmes and activities.
"She was involved in campaigns aimed at furthering the rights of women. She was determined that women should take their place in the struggle for freedom and economic empowerment," said Meadowlands councillor Balfour Manganyi
"Comrade Alinah was also a founding member of KIKA (a women's empowerment project)," said Manganyi.
At the time of her death Nkhobo was chairman of the Walter Sisulu branch (Meadowlands) of the ANC Women's League.
She was also chairman of the Women's Forum in ward 41 in Meadowlands.
Nkhobo is survived by her sisters Alice and Dimakatso, her two daughters Kedibone and Dineo and three grandchildren.
She will be buried tomorrow.
Her funeral service starts at 8am at Bapedi Hall in Zone 3, Meadowlands. The cortege moves to Avalon cemetery at 11.30am.
