Looking back, education authorities had been expecting too much of a school stuck in the poverty-stricken backwoods of the province with no textbooks or running water, toilets and electricity.
Thanks to the timely intervention by local education authorities and Sowetan, which donated textbooks and shoes to pupils, the school notched a 72 percent pass last year - nearly 30 percent up from the previous year.
