It can be done

From the dubious distinction of being South Africa's worst school in 2006, North West's Kgononyane High School has turned a tide of gloom into a positive outcome.

From the dubious distinction of being South Africa's worst school in 2006, North West's Kgononyane High School has turned a tide of gloom into a positive outcome.

The school's dismal results in 2006, when all but one out of 600 pupils in Grades 8 and 10 failed their exams, are now but a distant memory.

Looking back, education authorities had been expecting too much of a school stuck in the poverty-stricken backwoods of the province with no textbooks or running water, toilets and electricity.

Thanks to the timely intervention by local education authorities and Sowetan, which donated textbooks and shoes to pupils, the school notched a 72 percent pass last year - nearly 30 percent up from the previous year.
