The conduct of the notorious VIP protection unit on the N12, where a motorist was allegedly shot for being too close to the president's motorcade, shows an arrogant lack of constitutional understanding of citizens rights.
Though the facts are sketchy the question is: was it a genuine measure to protect the president? Why was the SABC footage seized and returned edited?
The unit is hiding something. In a democracy authorities can't be a law unto themselves.
The probe into the unit's conduct is welcome but long overdue. It must be hastened to stop further casualties.
