Plenty of fine deals to ring in new year

To start off with, I'd like to wish everyone a prosperous and wonderful 2009 filled with great specials.

We start off the year with the greatest news - the price of fuel has dropped dramatically.

But don't change the economy-minded driving you adopted last year. Continue with last year's approach and you will have plenty of change left in your pocket.

Also, this is the peak time for those "buy now and pay later" car buying schemes. Don't rush for "no deposit" specials without properly examining the documentary details.

My advice is to have a professional, say an attorney or anyone with experience in contract documentation, take a good look at the documentation so that you will get no surprises you can't handle later - such as a ballooned overall price.

The new year car buying statistics have been released and indications are that the economic slump is still very much with us.

Brand Pretorius of the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa is confident that things will go better this year and there's good reason to believe that Bra Tito Mboweni might lower the interest rate.

This week's specials begin in the West of Johannesburg at McCarthy Volkswagen Constantia, where they have a bunch of Golfs and Polos on special.

But my attention was drawn by a pre-owned 1,6 Comfortline Jetta with 56000km on the clock and selling for R160000.

No need to repeat how honest, reliable and genuinely practical VW's mid-sized sedan is. If you're looking for a spacious, comfortable and economic mid-sized sedan you can't go wrong with a VW Jetta.

While on new year promotions, if you're in Pretoria and you are in the process of buying an Opel Corsa Utility, take note of the fact that McCarthy GM dealerships in Menlyn and Villeria have a good deal going on this popular workhorse.

Students and first-time car buyers should make sure that they get affordable, economic cars. The car ownership experience can be horrific if you don't make informed and realistic decisions.
