A 16-year-old boy appeared briefly in the Mthunzini magistrate's court yesterday facing charges of rape and assault.
This follows an incident in which the youth from the Ibhadi area of KwaZulu-Natal allegedly broke into a house and stole some items before raping a 20-year-old woman who was visiting her boyfriend.
The youth allegedly forced himself on the sleeping woman. When the boyfriend tried to intervene the intruder stabbed him.
Neighbours heard the screams and rushed to help. The suspect was badly beaten by angry residents and had to be hospitalised, said police. The case was remanded until next Monday.
l Meanwhile, a Metrorail guard was wounded yesterday at Thembalihle station on the outskirts of Durban's KwaMashu .
Metrorail spokesman Isabel van der Westhuizen said a train pulled into the station at 4am when an unknown man fired on the guard.
"He was struck in the abdomen and is in a stable condition in hospital. The suspect fled the scene and no arrests have been made."
