Popular TV actor Senzo Ngqobe was caught driving under the influence of liquor. And this has earned him a criminal record.

Ngqobe, who plays Stone on e.tv's daily soapie Rhythm City, has also starred in the Oscar-winning local film Tsotsi, and in Township Stories and Blood Diamonds.

On Friday night, Ngqobe who had been drinking, got behind the wheel of his black Renault Megane. But his luck ran out when police, who were conducting a random check along Houghton Road in Johannesburg, stopped him.

According to the police, the actor reeked strongly of liquor. A breathalyser test was done on him.

It was found he had exceeded the legal limit of alcohol in his system and he was arrested.

Ngqobe appeared in the Hillbrow magistrate's court yesterday where he pleaded guilty to a charge of drunken driving. He was fined R3000 or six months in jail, half of which was suspended for five years.

He paid R1500 and was released. But not without treating the public to a free movie by accusing Sowetan of invading his privacy.

He burst out: "It is you again. At first you came to my flat and published a story about my affair. Now you have followed me to court. Stop invading my privacy because I don't like this. What is wrong with you?"

As he walked out of the court building, he showed Sowetan photographer a middle finger.

He was then whisked away in the same car he was caught driving while drunk.
