The family of a young woman who was murdered and her body buried in a secret grave for 10 days were filled with joy when the murderer was sentenced to 25 years' imprisonment on Friday.
Edworks Mashaba, the father of Advice Mashaba, 19, pictured, who was murdered by her boyfriend, Mandla Mathebula, 25, a former student at the Vaal University of Technology, at Songeni village outside Thulamahashe, in December 2006, said he now had confidence in the judicial system.
"We have finally reached closure to the case that has been tormenting us for the past two years," Mashaba said. "The family is happy that justice has prevailed."
In sentencing Mathebula, Judge Francis Legodi told him that he had not shown any remorse.
Judge Legodi jailed Mathebula for 20 years for murder and an additional five years for kidnapping. The sentences will run concurrently.
On December 26 2006 Mathebula went to the Mashaba family home at about 4am looking for his girlfriend, who had gone away with a new boyfriend, Elvis Mhlanga, for the night.
She arrived later and Mathebula, who was hiding near her home, approached her and assaulted her. .
Mashaba lost consciousness and Mathebula carried her to his home about 2km away, where he put her on his bed and covered her with sheets.
She never regained consciousness. He then dug a "deep" grave under a tree at the home of his policeman brother, Richard Mathebula, where he buried Mashaba.
After Mashaba's body was exhumed it was established that some body parts, including the breasts, her lips and eyes had been removed.
