Call to boost food security

Supporting the ANC manifesto on food security, South African Communist Party (SACP) general secretary Blade Nzimande said municipalities should stop selling land to developers to build golf estates, but use the land for food production.

Supporting the ANC manifesto on food security, South African Communist Party (SACP) general secretary Blade Nzimande said municipalities should stop selling land to developers to build golf estates, but use the land for food production.

Nzimande, pictured, was speaking after the launch of the ANC manifesto in East London at the weekend.

He said the issue of municipalities selling land to rich developers to generate cash for themselves while undermining broader developmental issues had been under discussion.

"The fact that it was raised on Saturday is an indication that the new government will be expected to deal with such anomalies," he said.

The manifesto also urges the private sector to create decent work. This is seen as an attempt to deal with the casualisation of labour as well as the payment of slave wages to unskilled people.
