Police hope to solve Mohlala murder soon

Mpumalanga police are hoping for a breakthrough in the murder of Nelspruit ANC councillor Jimmy Mohlala, a spokesman said yesterday.

Mpumalanga police are hoping for a breakthrough in the murder of Nelspruit ANC councillor Jimmy Mohlala, a spokesman said yesterday.

"We expect to make some arrests soon," Captain Leonard Hlathi said.

Hlathi declined to comment on rumours that Mohlala, the speaker of Mbombela municipality in Nelspruit, was the victim of a political hit.

Hlathi said such statements were "totally out of order".

"Don't talk about politics," he said. "The police are investigating the murder. Full stop."

Mohlala was gunned down in front of his son outside his Nelspruit house on Sunday evening. His son, 19, was also wounded during the shooting.

Mohlala was in the news last year for reportedly blowing the whistle on alleged corruption in a 2010 construction project.

At the time of his murder the ANC was in the process of taking disciplinary action against him for refusing to step down as speaker after the party had recalled him.

Afrikaans daily newspaper Beeld reported yesterday that Mohlala had allegedly received death threats via SMS last year. - Sapa
