Ajax Cape Town captain Brett Evans believes the Absa Premiership title will not slip through their fingers this season, after narrowly missing out on the championship last term.

Craig Rosslee's Urban Warriors are firm favourites to wear the crown in May and a win against cross-town rivals Santos tonight will further tighten their grip at the top of the table.

They meet in what should be a jaw-dropping Cape Town derby at Athlone Stadium at 7.30pm.

"We have the players and the poise to be crowned the Premiership champions this season," said Evans, the side's trusty left-back, yesterday.

"We went into the festive break in high spirits after finishing on top of the log, and we want to remain up there in the second round.

"What makes me confident of our chances is the amount of work the players are putting into their game.

"We will also put in extra effort against Santos who have shown much improvement in their recent matches. They are not not in fifth position by mistake."

The People's Team, who were unstoppable last month, also issued an austere warning to the pre-match favourites Ajax to brace themselves for a mammoth task today.

"Our preparations are going well and everyone is ready for the match," warned forward Eleazar Rodgers, the player Evans sees as a threat to the Urban Warriors.

Rodgers, on the other hand, does not see any Ajax player as a threat - not even the red hot Mabhuti Khenyeza.

Ajax, who are the hosts, have been fortified by the return from injury of Granwald Scott, Thomrick October and the fascinating Sameehg Doutie.

Nhlanhla "Shaba" Shabalala is on top of his game and could be a menace to David Bright's Santos in the midfield.

Bright will be hoping that the likes of Tyren Arendse and Mogogi Gabonamong shine tonight.

l This match will be televised live on SuperSport 4.
