Rachel Morapedi, an Ivory Park woman who was burnt with acid by her ex-boyfriend, has died in hospital after fighting for her life since the end of November.

Morapedi's brother, Aron, described his sister as a kind and loving person who had died at the hands of an animal.

"This has been the most difficult month of my life," Aron sobbed.

"I never met the animal who did this to my sister because they were not married. She always complained that he refused to accept their break-up but we thought they would sort it out."

He said her family was struggling to come to terms with her horrible death.

"We thought she was going to make it but her condition became worse on Saturday. I could not believe my eyes when I arrived at the hospital and the nurses removed the bandages to clean her wounds.

"Her skin was disappearing before my eyes and there was nothing the doctors could do to help her. She was in pain and could not speak."

Morapedi, 33, a mother of two, was admitted to Tembisa Hospital on November 26 with burns over 66 percent of her body after her jealous ex-boyfriend had thrown acid at her outside her home.

She had just arrived from work when he attacked her.

He poured the acid over her without saying a word and fled. She screamed for help and a taxi took her to hospital.

Police spokesman Lesiba Manamela said when the boyfriend was arrested he was found to have burn wounds on his arms.

"He was charged with attempted murder, which will now automatically change to murder."

He is expected to appear in the Tembisa magistrate's court on January 22 for a bail application.

"I plead with the justice system to sentence her attacker to life in prison," Aron said.

Morapedi will be buried on Saturday in Limpopo.
