The Department of Education released matric results to schools this morning at 7.30am .

Education Minister Naledi Pandor will comment on the results at noon in Pretoria and also announce the names of the top 10 pupils and schools.

About 592000 matriculants sat for the new outcomes-based education curriculum exams this year.

The pass rate last year was 65 percent and results this year, for the guinea pig matrics, are expected to be more or less the same.

However, teachers, parents and pupils have had mixed feelings about the efficacy of the OBE policy.

Sceptics say that most teachers are not fully conversant with the new system and that schools lack the resources to teach this sophisticated curriculum.

Gauteng MEC for education Angie Motshekga, in her Christmas message, pledged to reduce the gap between the best achievers in matric and those who do poorly.

"Looking ahead I think there remain challenges for both policy and practice to reduce the dispersion in achievement between our top students and those who do not do well.

"I see the ongoing development of the School Planning and Reporting Framework reinforcing the importance of both the government and the school sector having a deliberate and explicit focus on where student achievement should be raised.

"I see the Gauteng department of education continuing to focus on increasing the support available to teachers through the ongoing development of exemplars and the dissemination of effective practice and the results of evaluations," she said.

Motshekga will host a briefing on the 2008 matric examination results today at 10am in Johannesburg.

KwaZulu-Natal schools received their results yesterday but principals kept mum about the overall provincial results.
