TAC off to court

The Treatment Action Campaign is facing a legal challenge after its decision to retrench mainly female HIV-positive community workers.

Yesterday, TAC's former Gauteng provincial chairman, Gordon Mthembu, said he had decided to take TAC to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration following the decision, which will see the families of 350 community workers facing a bleak new year.

Mthembu told Sowetan he was forced to resign after he opposed TAC's decision to retrench 350 mainly female HIV-positive workers. He is now claiming constructive dismissal and his case will be heard on January 14.

TAC says the workers were retrenched due to insufficient funding.
