A number of arts organisations, arts initiatives and projects have benefited to the tune of more than R4 million from Business and Arts South Africa during this year.
Using its leveraging grant and special project funding systems, Basa dished out about R800000 through its special projects funding system and R4,5 million under its leveraging funding.
This made it one of the significant funders of the arts this year.
Through its special funding, this non-profit organisation directly funds arts projects, while under the grant system Basa matches any corporate funding of the arts.
The following arts organisations were some of the recipients in 2008/9 financial year.
l FNB Dance Umbrella 2009
An annual dance festival of new contemporary choreography now in its 21st year, a unique platform showcasing choreographers and companies from all over South Africa, has been the main stepping stone for many South Africans who now work internationally, such as Robyn Orlin, Boyzie Cekwana, Vincent Mantsoe and Gregory Maqoma.
l 2008 Corobrik National Ceramics Exhibition
The grant was used to support potters from under-served communities to exhibit their work at the University of Johannesburg.
l Architect Africa Film Festival 2008
An opportunity to enjoy some of the finest films featuring architecture and the built environment celebrating the creation of works of architecture, and to explore the relationships between buildings, the people who make and use them, and the environment in which they are located, using light, colour, texture and sound.
l Moving Into Dance Mophatong - 30th Anniversary and Outreach Programme
MIDM started in 1978, when Sylvia Glasser began a part-time nonracial dance company, producing original fusion of African movement, ritual and music with Western contemporary dance.
l Field Band Foundation
A non-profit organisation established 11 years ago based on the American marching band concept, aims to create opportunities for the development of life skills among the youth from townships through music and dance.
l Out The Box - Festival Puppetry and Visual performances
A festival that culminates with the Active Puppets Showcase - an ensemble of shows presented by young artists.
l Cape Town Edge 2008
Cape Town Edge is a collective made up of six independent companies that participate in the National Arts Festival, sharing resources, equipment, marketing, and technical and administrative support which produced a successful pilot project.
l Pancho Guedes - Alternative Modernist Exhibition
l General Motors High School Drama Competition
A drama competition for high schools from Eastern Cape incorporating a series of workshops in script writing, directing and stage management.
l Past, Present & Beyond 2008 Exhibition
A second prestigious annual event creating a new platform for artists held at Polokwane Art Museum to stimulate art appreciation in the province of Limpopo.
l Twilight Theatre - Theatre Night
Theatre Night held at Thusong Youth Centre in Alexandra aims to stimulate the love of theatre in the township.
l Ubuhle Besintu Daily Performances
Ubuhle project aims to contribute to the promotion, access and development of South African indigenous traditional dance as part of heritage, education and entertainment.
l Carols by Candle Night
In aid of the St Francis Hospice, an annual musical concert of Christmas carols featuring a massed choir, soloists and a brass ensemble.
l Johannesburg Art Gallery - Disturbances Exhibition

Tsholo Tshepe, the project administrator, said: "So far we've had wonderful and creative applications.
"We look forward to receiving many more applications in the new year, and would like to see more applications coming from artists and organisations, receiving support by business in the peri-urban and rural areas."
Basa is headed by its newly appointed chief executive, broadcaster Michelle Constant.
