Last week's military coup in Guinea presents the African Union with yet another challenge to its role as a moral authority on the continent.
Already reeling from its feeble handling of the Zimbabwe crisis, the AU will be hard-pressed to redeem itself by attempting to rein in Guinea's military junta and at least taking leadership in the processes to restore normalcy in the West African country.
The AU officially does not recognise governments ushered in by coups.
With the European Union apparently adopting a soft approach towards the junta, it would be interesting to see whether the AU would maintain its tough stance on the coup leader, Captain Moussa Dadis Camara.
