It is, in fact, not true that the SABC does not cover the PAC. Recently, when there was a breakaway group in the party we covered that since it was a newsworthy event.
Likewise, the ANC conference in Polokwane and the inaugural conference of Cope were important newsworthy events that have had a major effect on the political landscape.
When it comes to covering events the newsworthiness of such events is important.
It must be understood that we are at present not in an electioneering period. When the election begins all political parties will be afforded equitable coverage as regulated by Icasa conditions.
Lastly, the payment of a TV licence is a legal requirement and is payable in accordance with the Broadcasting Act.
The act states that anyone who uses a TV set or has a set in his/her possession must at all times have a valid licence.
Consequently, the licence fee is payable even if one never watches SABC1, 2 or 3 but only the M-Net pay channel, the private broadcaster e.tv or the digital DStv satellite service. So a television licence is not a service contract between the viewer and SABC.
It is disturbing that the PAC would incite citizens to disobey the law by not paying their TV licences and that is unacceptable.
