A 15-year-old Limpopo youth was among the women who gave birth on Christmas Day.

The baby's mother is from Phagameng township and could not be name because she is still under age. The beautiful baby girl weighed a normal 2,64kg and was born at the Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle.

Though the mother of the baby was overjoyed after the birth, the department of health expressed dismay at her age .

Spokesman Phuti Seloba said this showed beyond any shadow of a doubt that young people were not heeding calls to use contraceptives .

He said it was disappointing that young people were sexually active and were not heeding the Abstain, Be faithful and Condomise call.

"Our children should note that sex comes with responsibilities and that if one cannot cope with the outcomes of having sex, you should just abstain and apply the ABC rule," he said.

Seloba said children between the ages of 15 and 24 constitute the highest number of those who benefited from the government's child grants and those living with HIV.

He said the situation showed that young people were ignorant of the precautionary measures promoted by the department against HIV-Aids.

Meanwhile, three 15-year-old girls were among those who gave birth on Christmas Day in Limpopo hospitals last year.
