Orlando Pirates are on the verge of signing two top Absa Premiership strikers in their concerted effort to step up the challenge for the league championship.

The duo expected to join Bucs during the January 1 to 31 transfer window are SuperSport United's chief striker Katlego Mashego and Abia Nale of Lamontville Golden Arrows.

At one stage Nale was linked up with Kaizer Chiefs.

Mashego has bagged three goals for his club this season, while Nale still has to score. Nale has not played since the stories linking him to Chiefs appeared in the media.

Irvin Khoza, Pirates' chairman, said: "We are at an advanced stage [of negotiations] for the services of Katlego. We should have completed the negotiations with his agent but he is on holiday in Mpumalanga.

"We still have to deal with issues like the medical [checkup] but we could not deal with the player without the knowledge of the agent.

"I spoke to SuperSport United regarding the boy. I know the matter has been discussed at board level."

Turning to Nale, Khoza started by reminding Sowetanthat the dreadlocked goal poacher is a product of Pirates' development programme.

"We are also in discussions with Mato Madlala [Arrows' co-director] regarding Nale.

"We approached Arrows for a business deal. At the same time, we are talking to his agent."

Khoza seems determined to make the spiritual owners of the club - The Ghost - happy in the new year by beefing up Pirates strike force which has seen defender Lucas Thwala emerge as the team's leading scorer thus far with four goals in all competitions.

Mashego was influential upfront in helping United make history by clinching the inaugural Absa Premiership title. He was among the club's top goal scorers last season.

The 26-year-old Mashego joined United in 2006 from Platinum Stars. The striker, who was born in Bushbuckridge, has also played for Tubatse Crusaders in Limpopo.

The Sebokeng-born Nale, 22, once played in the Pirates' development structures after being recruited by Augusto Palacios.

Pirates loaned him to Pillars in 2006 where he scored three goals in five appearances.

He marked his debut season at Arrows last term with six goals.
