Young Lovers found dead

The badly decomposed bodies of a couple - originally from Umzinto on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast - have been discovered inside a rented room in Umlazi township in Durban.

The couple, both in their 20s, were last seen on last Wednesday.

Tenants at the same address said there had been a strange and horrible smell at the house since Saturday morning, but no one could explain where it was coming from.

The dead man, Thembelani Mkhwane, was a security guard at one of the big security companies.

His girlfriend, Nonhlanhla Mkhize, had visited him on the day of their deaths.

Mkhwane's landlady, Sindisiwe Mazibuko, said she last saw the couple on Wednesday.

"Mkhwane had returned from work that evening and his girlfriend arrived later - after a fight they had a week before."

She said the couple's room was always closed and no one had suspected anything was wrong.

"I have about 17 tenants and it is impossible to notice if one of them is not around all the time, especially at this time of the year. Most of them go home for Christmas."

One of the tenants said that as she walked past the couple's room she saw maggots coming out from underneath the door. Pushing the door open, she saw a man's body hanging from the roof - and a woman's body lying on the floor.

The landlady described the couple as very loving and not violent, but "they did have their misunderstandings and minor fights, like any other couple".

"They were very young, and like other people they had their ups and downs.

"I still can't believe what happened here."

Police spokesman Captain Khephu Ndlovu said the families of both the deceased had now been informed and were yesterday on their way to the house where their children had died.

He said it was understood that the couple had a fight which led to Mkhwane stabbing his girlfriend with a knife - and then hanging himself out of remorse.

A murder case and an inquest has been opened.
