Lawrence "Rhee" Mbanya, one of South Africa's greatest soccer stars, has died after undergoing an operation in Soweto.
Mbanya died at a private clinic in Diepkloof on Sunday night. He has been sick for some time, his son Banzo Mbanya confirmed yesterday.
Rhee and his only brother Difference "City Council" Mbanya, played for Moroka Swallows.
Phil "Chippa" Mogodi, South African Football Association Soweto chief executive, said: "Our condolences to his family and friends.
"We have indeed lost one of the greatest soldiers of South African soccer."
Mbanya will be buried at the Avalon Cemetery on Saturday at 11am. His funeral service will take place at 485 Pokhunku Street, Zone 7, Pimville starting at 7am. - Ramatsiyi Moholoa
