Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, will be alive and kicking on New Year's Eve. So if you are around this great city on December 31, that is the only place to be.

Some of the most popular musicians have been billed to usher in the New Year and the organisers are expecting hordes of revellers at the gig.

For the past few years, the square has become the venue of choice for many revellers on New Year's Eve and this year organisers do not expect it to be any different.

As always, the bash is hosted by the City of Johannesburg and SABC2.

This year's line up is Freshlyground, KB, Gang of Instrumentals, Wonderboom, MXO, Bleksem, Howza, Fikile Mlomo, DJ Zan D and DJ Zee.

A cursory glance at the artists will confirm that they have a solid following on the country's popular culture landscape and are sure to attract a huge crowd.

Multi-award winning group Freshlyground, for instance, is as popular at home as they are overseas judging by the number of concerts they were booked to perform at home and abroad this year. In fact for most of the year, they have been travelling and performing around the country and abroad.

KB has resuscitated her career recently and not only with her new album, but a stage act that has seen her pull off some of the most energetic stage acts in recent months.

She is a great entertainer and is sure to find favour with those fans who will be at the gig that will see out the old year and welcome in 2009.

As for MXO, the brother has a new album that has been very well received by local fans and it has defined him as a mature musician who knows when to release an album and how to grow with the times.

Howza is a new artist who has demonstrated that his talent extends beyond acting on the country's popular soapie, Generations.

The Gang of Instrumentals have arrived with a big bang. They have released commercially viable sounds that have quickly positioned them as one of South Africa's unique and innovative groups.

So if you are in and around Jozi on New Year's Eve and if you want to have fun, just head to Newtown and you will be in good hands as well as in the great company of individuals who know how to have fun as they welcome in the new year in grand style.
