The US says it can no longer support a proposed Zimbabwean power-sharing deal that would leave Robert Mugabe as president.
The shift, announced in South Africa yesterday by top US envoy for Africa, Jendayi Frazer, will put new pressure on Zimbabwe's neighbours to abandon Mugabe.
When the power-sharing agreement was announced in September, the US offered key support. It said that when the deal was implemented it would lift sanctions and help Zimbabwe renegotiate relations with international lenders. Frazer said those incentives were no longer on offer.
