The KwaZulu-Natal department of education officially closed its matric marking centres on Friday, heralding the beginning of a nail-bitting week leading to the release of results.

The department's Mbali Thusi said the marking process went well and that results would be released on time.

According to teacher unions and the department no problems or interruptions were reported during the marking period.

The National Teachers' Union deputy president Allen Thompson said they were happy with the work that teachers did this year and the effort they put into the marking of papers.

Thompson however expressed dissatisfaction with the money teachers were paid for marking. He said they will approach the Eduction Labour Relations Council for the rates to be increased.

"Although this is a little extra money to spend with their families, they still deserve to receive more than that for their hard work, and we are going to table the issue with the council."

Thompson said the union was also not happy with the number of markers. He said markers should be increased to ensure accuracy and to make the workload manageable.

Matric results will be released to schools on December 29.
