The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association is engaging the City of Johannesburg over the renaming of Alexandra Stadium to Meshack Kunene.
They have already written a letter to Mayor Amos Masondo, saying it was strange that such a decision was taken without the involvement of the soccer family. Similar letters have been written to the ANC's Alexandra branch and Gauteng Premier Paul Mashatile.
The stadium was renamed two months ago.
Moss Selolo, AFA president, said: "We strongly feel that the renaming of Alexandra Stadium was not handled in a proper way.
"While we agree that our heroes must be honoured and acknowledged, such processes should be all-inclusive and the public must also be involved.
"As the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association we were never consulted when it came to the renaming of the stadium
"Our feeling is that we have people like Leepile Taunyane, Irvin Khoza, Roger Sishi and Phillemon Molepo who stayed in Alexander where they served soccer very well.
"The stadium should have been named after one of those greats, that is why we are now taking it up with relevant people in power.
"While Meshack Kunene has contributed to the struggle against apartheid, we still feel that there are people who contributed immensely to the development of soccer in Alexandra."
Bongiwe Middleton, a representative in Masondo's office, has responded to Selolo's letter and promised that the council would get back to them.
